Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella serotypes isolated from poultry in Spain: Comparison between 1993 and 2006

► The prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of Salmonella on poultry were assessed. ► Data obtained in 1993 and 2006 from the same retail outlets in Spain were compared. ► A decrease in the prevalence (55.0% in 1993 and 12.4% in 2006) was observed over time. ► The serotypes and phage types detected are a frequent cause of human disease in Spain. ► The mean number of resistances per strain increased from 3.98 in 1993 to 5.00 in 2006.
