Metal accumulation and oxidative stress biomarkers in octopus (Octopus vulgaris) from Northwest Atlantic

► Oxidative stress biomarkers were assessed for the first time in octopus. ► Antioxidant enzymes were highly responsive to metal accumulation in digestive gland. ► CAT, SOD and GST activities were inter-correlated and prevented oxidative damage. ► Octopus is suggested as a bioindicator species for metal contamination.
