► The enhanced P emission model PhosFate was applied in two hilly catchments. ► A new optimization method that identifies the most effective sources is presented. ► Only a few percent of the total area generates the majority of the river loads. ► An effective management can be achieved by selecting the highly contributive areas. ► Implementation of the local practices should still rely on on-site experiences.
