► Atmospheric composition of three cities in South America was investigated. ► Organic and inorganic chemical composition of the particulate matter was useful to study the anthropogenic and natural markers. ► Benzo[a]pyrene equivalent values meant a significant cancer risk. ► Formate/acetate ratios indicated the strong contribution of photochemical reactions.
