Timing and significance of the initiation of present day deserts in the northeastern Hexi Corridor, China

► The deserts in the northeastern Hexi Corridor formed no later than about 0.85 Ma. ► The whole of the Northwest Arid Area of China formed at about 0.85 Ma. ► The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau is thought to have triggered these events.
