Cometabolic degradation of trichloroethylene in a hollow fiber membrane reactor with toluene as a substrate

► Sustained higher anaerobic biotreatment of VOCs was approved. ► No intermediate products such as DCE and VC were detected. ► More than 90% of toluene could be eliminated. ► Observed maximum elimination capacity of TCE (8.5 g m−3 h−1) is two times higher than reported.
