Arctic sea ice decline and ice export in the CMIP5 historical simulations

► A first attempt to evaluate the Fram Strait ice area export in six CMIP5 models. ► An inverse relationship is found between ice export and Arctic sea ice thickness. ► One model suggests that ice export can explain 28% of variations in long-term trends of sea ice thickness.
