► Investigated Aspergillus fungal species were isolated from cakes and fresh ready-for-use salads. ► Significant effects of oregano extract on the inhibition of Aspergillus carbonarius, Aspergillus wentii, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus versicolor growth. ► Significant reduction effect of oregano extract to the sterigmatocystine biosynthesis by A. versicolor (rare or first report).
