Methylation of toluene with methanol over HZSM-5: A periodic density functional theory investigation

C8H11+ species are formed as important intermediates during the methylation of toluene at its four carbon positions. Furthermore, methane is formed via an intramolecular hydrogen transfer from the ring carbon to the carbon of the methyl group.
