The elimination or degradation of nitrogen oxides, the major pollutants of the atmosphere, has been attracted extensive attention. Numerous methods have been studied and used to eliminate the nitrogen oxides, and the selective catalytic reduction (SCR), using ammonia as the reducing agent, is an effective method to remove nitrogen oxides. The studies show that the vanadium-based catalysts for NH3-SCR have the advantage of wide operation temperature windows and superior low temperature activity in reduction of NOX in the oxidizing atmosphere. This review summarized the development of the multi-metal vanadium-based catalysts for NH3-SCR, and elaborated the kinds of support and promoters, the catalytic function and mechanism, and the synthesis methods of vanadium-based catalysts for NH3-SCR. The purpose of this review is to highlight: (1) the structure-activity relationship for the vanadium-based catalysts; (2) the NH3-SCR mechanism of vanadium-based catalysts; and (3) the design strategies of the catalysts as superior low-temperature activity and wide-temperature vanadium-based in the field of NH3-SCR technique.
