Application of magnetite catalyzed chemical oxidation (Fenton-like and persulfate) for the remediation of oil hydrocarbon contamination

► Magnetite was tested to activate H2O2 and persulfate for oil removal. ► Degradation of weathered and crude oil was studied. ► Both oxidants greatly reduced the contamination without significant by-products. ► Soluble FeII was found to be unable to activate chemical oxidation. ► H2O2 was non-selective but persulfate was less efficient towards HMW n-alkanes.
