► Different structural qualities within the topsoil were detected by VESS. ► VESS showed similar results to bulk density, soil resistance and LLWR. ► VESS worked well in soils of contrasting textures. ► The effect of soil management was detected by VESS. ► In Oxisols, Sq > 3.5 LLWR = 0, leading to a convergence of both of restricted conditions to plants.
