Effect of cationic polyelectrolytes on the performance of paper diagnostics for blood typing

- The effect of two types of papermaking polyelectrolyte on red blood cell retention was quantified.
- Residual polyaminoamide epichlorohydrin (PAE) on paper has no effect on blood typing performance.
- High molecular weight cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) dried on paper can retain RBC. RBC retention increases with charge density and concentration of CPAM dried on paper.
- Wet CPAM at 0.1 wt% or greater retains all RBC when adsorbed on paper.
