Power quality improvement under nonideal AC mains in distribution system

• DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) is used for harmonics suppression and load balancing under nonlinear loads in three wire nonideal (Distorted and Unbalanced voltage) ac mains.
• Modified synchronous detection algorithm is used for its control with self supporting dc bus in power factor correction and zero voltage regulation modes.
• Function of DSTATCOM with proposed control algorithm is validated through the MATLAB simulation and its real time hardware implementation using DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for nonlinear loads.

The DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) is one of effective and reliable solution for compensation of harmonics and load balancing which are common in normal distribution system. The main focus of this paper is on the control of a DSTATCOM under non-ideal ac mains where a modified synchronous detection algorithm is used for extraction of reference supply currents. The DSTATCOM is used for mitigation of current harmonics, load balancing with self supporting dc bus voltage of VSC (Voltage Source Converter) used as a DSTATCOM. Proposed control algorithm is implemented in a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for switching of VSC of DSTATCOM under nonlinear loads. Its performance is found satisfactory under steady state and dynamics conditions.
