Improving startup performance with carbon mesh anodes in separator electrode assembly microbial fuel cells

► Separator electrode assembly MFCs can be difficult to startup. ► Acclimation with raw wastewater and set potentials produced erratic startup results. ► Preacclimated cultures always produced the best startup and performance. ► A more negative potential (−0.2 V) produced the best results with preacclimation.
