Optimization of the hydrogen yield from single-stage photofermentation of glucose by Rhodobacter capsulatus JP91 using response surface methodology

► RSM optimized hydrogen yield during single stage photofermentation of glucose. ► Maximum hydrogen yield (5.5 mol H2/mol glucose) is 85% higher than previously achieved. ► Maximum hydrogen yield is similar to what was previously shown for two-stage systems. ► Further improvements might be possible through metabolic engineering.
