Bioconversion of volatile fatty acids into lipids by the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica

► Volatile fatty acids could be used as carbon source for microbial lipids production. ► A two-stage fed-batch strategy was designed using Yarrowia lipolytica. ► Lipids composition was found quite similar to that of vegetable oils. ► Simultaneous biovalorization of volatile fatty acids and glycerol was demonstrated.
