► The MFC cathode works well in soils where it can use oxygen excreted from wetland plant roots. ► A biocathode buried in the rice rhizosphere has comparable efficiency to an air cathode. ► Maximum oxygen efflux was 20 μmol plant−1 day−1 based on cell current calculations.
