Investigating a cascade of seven hydraulically connected microbial fuel cells

► Seven miniature MFCs were operated in cascade formation. ► Individual MFC behaviour could be linked to substrate depletion. ► Feedstock was reduced to COD levels fit for discharge to the environment. ► Fluctuating flow rates and intermittency improved overall cascade performance. ► Power density was superior when connected electrically in parallel than in series.
