Characterization of biochars to evaluate recalcitrance and agronomic performance

► Biochar ash content depends on feedstock, volatile matter on pyrolysis temperature. ► Fixed carbon contents decrease for biochars with more than 20% ash. ► Classification of stability improves using both volatile matter and H:C ratios. ► Biochars with less than 2% ash show greatest pH increase with pyrolysis temperature.
