► We isolated a fungus Armillaria sp. F022 from a tropical rain forest. ► Five co-substrates were affecting the degradation of benzo[a]pyrene. ► Laccase played a key role in the BaP biodegradation. ► We examined the fate and co-metabolic degradation of benzo[a]pyrene. ► Benzo[a]pyrene-1,6-quinone is the main metabolites by Armillaria sp.
