Bacterial cellulose production from cotton-based waste textiles: Enzymatic saccharification enhanced by ionic liquid pretreatment

► Cotton-based waste textiles were used as feedstock for bacterial cellulose (BC) production. ► A new approach to produce BC by using wastes and reduce environmental problems. ► [AMIM]Cl was chosen to pretreat cotton textiles to enhance enzymatic saccharification. ► Effect of residual ionic liquid was evaluated during saccharification and fermentation. ► The properties of BC from glucose-based medium and from cotton waste were compared.
