Creating 'therapeutic landscapes' for mental health carers in inpatient settings: A dynamic perspective on permeability and inclusivity

► This paper examines the experience of informal carers, and their views about a new psychiatric hospital building. ► The research was part of a larger project of a pre- and post-occupation evaluation of a new psychiatric inpatient facility. ► We explore the idea of the carers' journey through a pathway of caring, from home space and community to the hospital. ► Our interpretation combines ideas from phenomenology with ideas about 'therapeutic landscapes' and 'managed permeability'. ► Policy relevant findings include the importance of accommodating the needs of carers in a psychiatric inpatient setting.
