Can the built environment reduce health inequalities? A study of neighbourhood socioeconomic disadvantage and walking for transport

► Disadvantaged neighbourhoods have greater street connectivity and a more diverse land use mix. ► Residents of disadvantaged neighbourhoods are less likely to have access to a motor vehicle. ► The built environment of disadvantaged neighbourhoods and limited motor vehicle access contribute to higher levels of walking for transport. ► Built environment interventions that increase walking for transport in disadvantaged neighbourhoods may reduce inequalities in chronic disease.
