Pratiques langagières et comportements du patient en milieu familial : apport des méthodes ethnographiques multimodales pour la recherche en médecine

Medical data collected with the information systems used in healthcare institutions bring invaluable resources for research. However, another source of data could be used in order to find out more about the patients in other environments with the help of researchers in the humanities and social sciences. By capturing families' daily practices and interactions in video recordings with ethnographic methods and a multimodal approach, it is possible to complement and enrich the research conducted in medical environments. In this paper, we give two examples that show how new aspects of the patients could be discovered and be useful to medical research, when they are observed in their daily activities and interactions by taking into account their specificity and subjectivity: (1) longitudinal follow-ups of children in their family environment with a focus on language disorders and language choices; (2) video recordings of family dinners, which are specifically relevant to observe meals and eating practices and can complement our knowledge about overweigh children and their family.
