Formation patterns at the air-grain interfaces in spinning granular films at high rotation rates

► A series of experiments are described to investigate the free surface shape of air-immersed grains. ► At high rotation rates a steep depression appears and air-grain interfaces in the depression shows fractal type patterns. ► Computer simulations are used to show fractal patterns are due to turbulent diffusion.
