Assessing smectic liquid-crystal continuum models for elastic bilayer deformations

► We examine the energetics of protein-induced lipid bilayer deformations. ► We evaluate continuum elastic models using molecular dynamics simulations. ► Our results indicate that the first lipid shell around at least some membrane proteins has properties that differ from those of the bulk lipids.
