Improved solvation routes for the Bunsen reaction in the sulphur iodine thermochemical cycle: Part I - Ionic liquids

► Ionic liquids are investigated as solvents for Bunsen reaction. ► Co-extraction of H2O and HI into ionic liquid occurs. ► [Tf2N]− ionic liquids showed most promise with 20% HI extracted. ► Ionic liquids tested succumb to ion exchange mechanism and so are not suitable. ► Properties can be tailored by choice of anion/cation so further work is needed.
