Metal-citrate complex uptake and CitMHS transporters: From coordination chemistry to possible vaccine development

► The recently discovered family of proteins responsible for secondary metal-citrate transport, CitMHS, is described. ► The relevant metal-citrate coordination chemistry and specifically that of iron are presented. ► Medicinal applications, such as the development of vaccines against gram-positive pathogens, are also discussed.
