► Cobalt, nickel and zinc complexes oft a tripodal N,N,N ligand are described. ► UV-Vis and X-ray crystallographic investigations show structural flexibility. ► The preferred coordination number is tuned by the steric bulk of the ligands. ► With chelating N,O co-ligands five-coordinate complexes form predominantly.
