Degradable UV-crosslinked hydrogel for the controlled release of triclosan with reduced cytotoxicity

A degradable UV-crosslinked hydrogel was prepared for loading triclosan (TC) by mixing diacrylate polymer macromer (PM) and photoinitiator under a low-intensity UV light. The hydrogel could release TC sustainably with reduced side effects. With controlled antibacterial activity, the use of TC would be safer and more efficient. TC-loaded hydrogel showed slight cytotoxicity, which was much lower than free TC. More importantly, the hydrogel displayed excellent biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, suggesting the great potential application in the delivery of TC.232
