Micro-structural characterisation of homogeneous and layered MFC nano-composites

► We perform a comprehensive micro-structural analysis of MFC composites. ► A method for differentiating unbleached from bleached MFC in SEM-BEI images is introduced. ► The combination of complementary MFCs yields improved film properties with respect to strength and water wettability properties. ► Characterisation of MFC-composites is valuable for understanding their properties.
