The oxidation of SiC in the SiC-borosilicate glass composites at elevated temperature let out gasses, which form big pores and restricts the application of the composites as wear resistant, thermal sinking and packaging materials. Ti powder was introduced to inhibit the oxidation of SiC. By the thermogravimetric (TG) result, SiC was protected by the preferential oxidation of Ti. X-ray diffraction (XRD) inferred that the oxidation resultant of Ti was rutile titanium oxide and it could enter into the glass network. When Ti was over 4Â wt%, the amount of rutile titanium oxide was over the intake capacity of glass and the bending strength and relative density of the composites decreased. The composite with 4Â wt% Ti got minimum volume expansion ratio and maximum bending strength. Compared with composites without Ti additive, the volume expansion ratio decreased from 36.52 to â12.46% and the bending strength improved from 16.6 to 78.8Â MPa.
