Microstructures and properties of friction surfaced coatings in AISI 440C martensitic stainless steel

► Well-bonded coatings in AISI 440C were obtained using friction surfacing. ► Microstructural evolution in friction surfaced 440C coatings was discussed. ► Friction surfaced 440C coatings showed satisfactory corrosion and wear performance. ► Friction surfacing was shown to be suitable for wide area coverage.
