Novel double ceramic coatings based on Yb2Si2O7/La2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 by plasma spraying on Cf/SiC composites and their thermal shock behavior

► Yb2Si2O7 and La2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 or (LZ7C3) powders are made by solid-state reactions. ► Spray-drying results in freely flowing powders with rounded surface morphologies. ► Cf/SiC composites are coated with double ceramic layers (DCL) by plasma spraying. ► Thermal shock behavior of DCL is evaluated between 400 °C and 1500 °C in a burner rig. ► Chemical interactions between DCL coatings are reported.
