Effects of CO2 injection on shallow groundwater resources: A hypothetical case study in the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer, UK

► We assessed far-field pressure effects and identified leakage routes for pressure dissipation resulting from CO2 storage. ► Model results show potentially significant pressure head increases in the potable aquifer 60 km up-dip from injection. ► The response of confined groundwater pressure heads to injection is rapid, as is the subsequent recovery. ► The response within the unconfined aquifer is both dampened and delayed. ► The degree of impact on shallow groundwater systems is highly sensitive to the vertical leakage assigned to the caprock.
