► We examined the technical and environmental performance of a solar water heater (SWH). ► Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was used for the analysis. ► The main environmental impact of the system is the acidification effect. ► The payback period is 5 years with fuel savings of 4280.0 € over its life time.
