Low cost natural polysaccharide and vinyl monomer based IPN for the removal of crude oil from water

The potential for using natural polysaccharide based interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) as an adsorbent for the removal of oil from contaminated water was investigated in the present work. The IPN was used to absorb crude oil from waste water at various experimental conditions. The effect of different parametric conditions like adsorbent mass, time, temperature and mixing speed on adsorption of crude oil was studied. The maximum adsorption was observed at rotation speed of 500 rpm, temperature 40 °C, pH 3, contact time 60 min and crude oil concentration 0.030 g/L. The results revealed that crude oil adsorption with natural polysaccharide based biodegradable IPN is feasible due to its high affinity for oil, make the IPN important from technological and environmental view point.
