► We introduce an improved workflow for systematic gas shale characterization. ► A suite of shales from a number of sedimentary basins around the world. ► Petrophysics using XRD, XRF, CEC, SSA often correlate with geomechanical properties. ► Permeability can be determined using Mercury Injection Capillary Pressure (MICP). ► SEM and X-ray CT imaging provide additional correlating parameters.
