Growth and characterization study of γ-glycine crystal grown using different mole concentrations of zinc sulphate as structure-directing agents

Single crystals of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1â¯M of ZnSO4-added glycine were grown by slow evaporation method and their structural, optical and antimicrobial properties were studied. The incorporation of ZnSO4 on glycine was confirmed by the Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD) and Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) studies. The lesser molar proportion of ZnSO4 yields only α polymorph of glycine where as higher molar proportion of ZnSO4 yields γ polymorph of glycine; this was confirmed by PXRD investigation. The influence of ZnSO4 on the optical transmission in the visible and Ultraviolet (UV) region was studied by UV-Visible-Transmission spectrum. Nonlinear Optical (NLO) productivity of γ- glycine crystals was studied by Kurtz and Perry technique using Nd: YAG laser. The results revealed increased SHG efficiency with the highest of about 3.7 in the presence of 0.6â¯M of ZnSO4 compared to the reference material Potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate (KDP) crystal. The antimicrobial behavior of the doped samples were studied using agar diffusion method.
