Thermodynamic calculation of glass formation for Co-ETM alloys based on Miedema'smodel

Miedema's model has been used in predicting the glass forming range. Further, Xia and Wang proposed a computing model of glass forming ability for binary and ternary systems. In this paper, the glass forming range and ability of nine Co-ETM (Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W) binary and five ternary Co-Zr-ETM (V, Cr, Mo, Nb, and W) alloy systems have been systematically calculated based on Miedema's model. The predicted glass forming ranges match well with those reported from experiments observations. The glass forming ability of the systems was predicted, and the predicted alloys with superior glass forming ability are Co50Zr50, Co55Hf45, Co50Ti50, Co60Nb40, Co60Ta40, Co55V45, Co50Cr50, Co55Mo45, Co60W40, Co42Zr48Cr10, Co46Zr46Nb8, Co48Zr52Mo0, Co44Zr46V10, and Co48Zr52W0. It should be mentioned that the parameter of glass forming ability γ⁎ has the same variation trend as that of the elastic contribution to enthalpy. Also, the effect of atomic radius mismatch and electronegativity difference on the glass forming range and ability is discussed for the systems.
