► Long-term caloric restriction suppresses both absolute and normalized VO2 and heart rate. ► Bradycardia and suppression of VO2 are maintained for one year. ► Responses are similar at thermoneutral and cool living temperatures. ► Heart rate and metabolic rate are rapidly restored to baseline during re-feeding.
