Amifostine, a radioprotectant agent, protects rat brain tissue lipids against ionizing radiation induced damage: An FTIR microspectroscopic imaging study

► The protective effect of amifostine on different regions of the brain were studied. ► Radiation caused degradation of tissue lipids as a result of lipid peroxidation. ► Amifostine inhibited the radiation-induced damage on the brain lipids. ► FTIR microspectroscopy provides a sensitive monitoring of the lipid peroxidation. ► The FTIR ratio images can be used to detect the lipid peroxidation in a tissue.
