Heparan sulfate mediates cell uptake of αB-crystallin fused to the glycoprotein C cell penetration peptide

- Removal of heparan sulfate on CHO cells prevented uptake of gC-αB
- Mutation of gC peptide indicated an asparagine residue is required for protein binding
- Alanine substitution of the cysteine residue prevented protein crosslinking, but retained normal CLA and prevented cell death
