► The role of estrone on cellular biochemistry of vascular endothelium was evaluated. ► The steroid displays an own mechanism of action with distinctive features. ► Estrone (E1) stimulates endothelial cells growth and survival. ► E1 prevents LPS-induced monocyte adhesion and adhesion molecules expression. ► The presence of estradiol impairs the hormonal response.
