The blurred boundaries of functional reference: a response to Scarantino & Clay

- We respond to Scarantino & Clay's novel conception of functional reference (FR).
- Their revision of the concept unfortunately does not solve its central problems.
- The proximate mechanisms underpinning signalling remain largely opaque.
- Combining signal and context in a “unit of FR” does not refine but blurs FR.
- The study of meaning attribution and decision-making appears more fruitful to us.
