Gabapentinoids, action on the alpha-2 delta subunit of calcium channels, decrease hyperalgesia and have a postoperative opioid sparing effect reducing also the incidence of opioid side effects. However, their own side effects such as sedation and visual disturbances are a limitation to their use. In addition, the literature inconsistently demonstrates that they could prevent the occurrence of chronic pain after surgery.
