There is a growing interest for intra-and periarticular infiltration after hip or knee surgery due to the development of minimally invasive surgery. However, an important variability in the choice of local anaesthetic solution including the dose and the combination with an adjuvant makes it difficult to draw valid conclusions from meta-analysis on this topic. This is true for the use of intra- and peri-articular catheteters as well. Patients who benefit from intra-articular infiltration have nevertheless a better pain control than those who do not have a regional analgesic technique. The determination of the more efficient regional anaesthetic technique remains a matter of controversy after hip and knee surgery.
