Surgery is an action-oriented medical specialty. It is a fundamental part of any health system. Good surgical practice may positively and significantly have an impact on the performance of a health system. Training excellent surgeons requires explicit and outcome-predictable educational processes. Contemporary frameworks and content of surgical education are presented, with a review of their impact on the training of the general physician. Mentoring and the role of life-long surgical skills assessment are also discussed. It is concluded that better surgical training processes may improve the health of our society.
