Protocolo diagnóstico y tratamiento empírico de las infecciones del sistema nervioso central en el paciente inmunocomprometido sin infección por el VIH

Central nervous system (CNS) infections are diseases with high morbidity and mortality. Immunocompromised patients, such as those who undergo allogeneic stem cell transplants or undergoing immunosuppressive therapeutic regimens, present a high risk of this type of infections. The organisms that cause them vary depending on the underlying disease. Among them, Toxoplasma gondii and fungi, but also viruses such as herpes simplex virus or JC virus, among others. Here, the diagnostic options, radiological images as well as laboratory techniques, and the treatment applied to each of the possible causal agents are summarized.
